Professional Development

The UFT Teacher Center is now providing professional development seminars, free of charge, to home child care providers who are members of the UFT and ACORN. Registration is required. There is a one - time $10 registration fee.

"The classes are hands-on and well structured," said one Brooklyn provider. "We're doing what we need to do so that we can prepare the children for school."

The sessions are focused on the nine topics mandated by New York State. They are designed to fulfill the 30-hour, 9 topic requirement for licensing and renewal. Each session will give you four hours. A certificate will be issued at the end of each session. Providers with licenses are strongly advised to take professional development courses a year in advance.

What type of training is required to provide child care in New York State?

Here are the 9 topics that you need to take classes in:

  • Principles of Early Childhood Development
  • Child Day Care Program Development
  • Safety and Security Procedures, including Communication between Parents and Staff
  • Identification of Child Abuse and Maltreatment and Statues and Regulations Pertaining to child Abuse and Maltreatment
  • Education and Information on the Identification, Diagnosis and Prevention of Shaken Baby Syndrome and SIDS
  • Statutes and Regulations Pertaining to Child Day Care
  • Nutrition and Health Needs of Infants and Children
  • Business Record Maintenance and Management


PLEASE NOTE:

Registered Family Day Care Providers — each registered family day care provider is required to complete at least 15 hours of training during the first six months of registration and at least 30 hours of training during each registration period.

Group Family Day Care Providers — each licensed group family day care provider, assistant and alternate assistant must complete a minimum of 15 hours of training during the first six months of licensure and 30 hours of training must be completed every two years.

The sessions have been designed to help you fulfill the 30-hour requirement for licensing and renewal. Each session will give you 4 hours.

All seminars are held on Saturdays, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at UFT offices in Brooklyn and Queens. Seminars previously scheduled in the Manhattan UFT office have been cancelled.

About the Educational Seminars

  • All seminar sessions led by New York City Department of Education; certified early-childhood specialists from the UFT Teacher Center
  • Free
  • Focus on developmentally appropriate practices from infancy through school-age
  • Provide practical, hands-on activities at each session.
  • Provide participants with opportunities to share and learn from one another.
  • Certificates issued at end of each session
  • Resources plus make-and-take materials will be provided
  • A light breakfast and snack will be served.

Videoconference Training Programs

State University of New York (SUNY) Strategies Group provides early child care, videoconference training programs to providers and other interested persons free of charge. Register by downloading the application, or online. The videoconference site list includes New York City locations near you. The schedule lists topics to be covered and dates of upcoming programs. While not mandatory, these programs cover topics needed for your daycare provider license.

NYC Early Childhood Professional Development Institute (available in SPANISH)

The Center for the Childcare Work Force, a project of the American Federation of Teachers Educational Foundation, works to improve the quality of early care and education for all children by promoting policy, research, and by advocating for better pay and working conditions for persons working in this field.

The National Child Care Information Center (selected resources available in SPANISH) is a clearinghouse of information on early care and education.

The Illinois Early Learning Project Web site (available in SPANISH) is a source of evidence-based information on early care and education for parents, caregivers, and teachers of young children in the State of Illinois. The Web site offers printable Tip Sheets for caregivers and parents.

Colorin Colorado (available in SPANISH) provides the tools you need to help English Language Learners succeed. Reading tip sheets in 10 languages, plus best instructional practices and a monthly e-newsletter, are all available at this free resource for PreK-3 educators, created by the American Federation of Teachers and the Reading Rockets project of public broadcasting.
