Tammie Miller
Born and raised in Brooklyn, Tammie Miller has been a Family Daycare Provider for three years. She loves working with children, and “getting to make an impression in their lives early on.”
While her goal is to provide quality, affordable care for families with busy parent schedules, Miller, like so many home-based providers in New York City, says her main obstacle has been communication with the city and state agencies that pay and license her.
“It is unfair to have to wait a whole month to get paid, and then the payments are often late,” she laments. “Computers constantly get glitches. I spend hours on the phone trying to speak to a representative.”
“We want a union because we all share the same problems," says Miller of her work with other providers to organize and gain the right to collective bargaining. "As individuals we have little power, but if we come together collectively we can change things,” says Miller.
